Judicial Operations
Alternative Sentencing Unit
The Alternative Sentencing Unit supervises pre-arrest, pre-trial and sentenced offenders who must abide by certain court ordered restrictions while released in the community. These conditions may range from weekly communication to more intensive levels of supervision such as random drug screenings or home confinement. In some instances, a person may be required to wear a GPS and/or an alcohol monitoring device to ensure compliance with their conditional release.
Court Security
Sheriff’s deputies are at the front doors and at the judges’ sides at five courthouses in Pinellas County. They ensure the security of hundreds of courthouse employees and the thousands of citizens who come to the court houses every day to conduct business, appear for proceedings or serve on a jury.
Deputies will search briefcases, purses, backpacks and other belongings before entry into the courthouses. Weapons are not permitted in the courthouses, and will be confiscated. Persons caught with weapons are subject to further action.
Misdemeanor Probation
The Misdemeanor Probation Unit monitors and enforces compliance to court ordered conditions on offenders sentenced to probation for misdemeanor offenses. In addition to post-sentencing case management, the unit provides referrals to relative community resources which promotes higher success rates.
Patrol Operations
Deputies with the Sheriff’s Patrol Operations Bureau provide law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas of Pinellas County, 13 contract cities, county preserves, and several local schools. In total, the Patrol Operations Bureau provides law enforcement services to 41% of the population and 141 square miles of land.
School Resource Deputies
The Sheriff’s Office contracts with the Pinellas County School Board to provide School Resource Deputies in the following middle schools and high schools. The role of the School Resource Deputy is to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff members. School Resource Deputies also present a variety of personal safety and substance abuse prevention programs.

Patrol Special Operations Units provide a variety of specialized patrol and investigative expertise in the Sheriff’s service area and in support of other Pinellas law enforcement agencies.
Investigations
Child Protection Investigation Division – CPID
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is one of six sheriffs’ offices in the state of Florida which investigates reports of child abuse and neglect. When the Florida Abuse Hotline receives a report of child abuse or neglect, state law requires the report be investigated. The State’s decision to contract this task to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office allows us to draw upon the experience, expertise, and resources of local law enforcement in conjunction with social services to find the best and safest solution for at risk children.

Homicide, crimes against children, robbery, arson, auto theft, fraud, exploitation and burglary are among the many categories of crime investigated by detectives with the Investigative Operations Bureau.
