The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit currently operates two Bell OH-58 A/C helicopters, which were acquired from the Department of Defense military surplus program and placed in service in January 1996. Through this program and other surplus programs, the Aviation Unit has been able to operate at a tremendous reduced cost to the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of jackson County. The Sheriff’s Office also currently operates a recently acquired Cessna 172 to be used for surveillance, transport and other investigative purposes. The use of these helicopters and other aircraft has been an asset to our department and community in combating drugs, as well as person and property crimes.
The Judicial Services Division provides law enforcement and security for The Jackson County Courthouse. It is our responsibility to provide a stable, relatively predictable environment in which an individual or group may pursue its ends without disruption or harm and without fear of such disturbance or harm. A Deputy Sheriff is required to attend all criminal and civil sessions of County and Circuit Court to carry out this responsibility. Outside of court hearings, Deputies are also responsible for maintaining order in each judicial office and all other areas of the building. There is a Deputy assigned to each Judge. There is also a Deputy assigned to each Jury when trials are in session or a Jury has been sequestered. Our duties are taken very seriously due to the fact that all sessions of Court involve a person’s family, property, liberty and sometimes even their life and due to this fact, emotions sometimes run high. Deputy Sheriff’s assigned to the Court House are also called upon to assist the patrol Division when needed.
Dive / Rescue
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team ia a highly specialized and multi jurisdictional unit which responds to any county within the tri-states area as needed. The unit currently consists of 8 sworn officers who are experienced in search operations. The team is evolving and growing as call demand dictates. The minimum qualifications for team divers are open water, advanced open water, nitrox, dry suit and rescue diver. To be selected to attend dive training, prospective divers have to go through a rigorous swim trial and testing before being determined to be fit for service. After becoming a service member, the team attends mandatory training each month and is on rotation call 24 hours a day to respond to any emergency or call out. The dive team also is equipped with naval side scan sonar technology to assist with searching large open areas that would normally take weeks to accomplish. The team’s primary duties include; search and rescue, body recovery, underwater crime scene investigation and evidence preservation / collection. This team will operate in any body of water, any weather condition and will expend every means to complete the designated mission. The members of the team are professionals who have achieved excellence in their roles as Sheriff’s Office divers. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is extremely proud of its dive team and its accomplishments.
The patrol Division is the largest and most visible function of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. It is the first line of service to the citizens of Jackson County. The Patrol Division is staffed by 25 patrol deputies. Patrol is supervised by a Patrol Captain, three lieutenants, three sergeants, three corporals. These deputies are augmented by the Reserve Program. Together these officers provide patrol and emergency law enforcement services to Jackson County 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
The Patrol Division patrols and responds to all calls for service within the 996 square miles of Jackson County as well as providing law enforcement services to Chipola College, Compass Lake and the Cities of Alford and Campbellton under contract. Contracting for law enforcement allows a city or agency to maintain local control and identity while saving significant money, providing their citizens with a larger and more experienced law enforcement agency, with greater resources tham small cities could normally afford.

The SRO/Truancy Division consists of four officers that perform several duties from school safety to truancy enforcement.

Dogs are equipped with a superior sense of smell and keen abilities to distinguish between odors and detect movement. They are also very intelligent and adapt well to an ever changing environment. Humans have recognized the benefits of using canines in law enforcement dating back to ancient Egypt.
JCSO currently has two K-9 teams that are assigned to a variety of tasks in the field. In the field the K-9 teams assist road patrol in narcotics detection during traffic stops and building searches.
