The mission of the Indian River Shores Department of Public Safety is to protect the lives and property of the residents of Indian River Shores and its visitors, by providing the highest level of professional Public Safety services possible. The goal of the Department is to ensure the highest quality of life for every citizen we serve. The Department’s foundation is to provide a commitment of “Service Excellence,” that is, to begin with pride and end with excellence.
“Service Excellence” implies that the Department places an emphasis on resident communication, community needs, public safety, and education. “Service Excellence” translates to Community Oriented Policing, which places the Officers in the neighborhoods, providing whatever services and security are necessary on a continuing basis. “Service Excellence” requires that Public Safety Officers strive to maximize their visibility and communicate with Indian River Shores’ residents through its Community Liaison and Code Enforcement Officers.

The Commission of Florida Law Enforcement awards accreditation status to police departments that reach a level of professional standards dictated by compliance with over 300 policies that govern each aspect of the agency’s operations. These policies include structure, organization, training, hiring, personnel, deployment, responsiveness, and routine calls. Realizing accreditation is a demanding and full time process as policies and procedures are continually being updated and revised. The Commission requires that all policies are accompanied by three years of documentation which proves agency compliance. This level of accomplishment has been achieved by only 120 of the 400 law enforcement agencies in the State. Indian River Shores Public Safety was first awarded accreditation status in February, 2009 and this accreditation was valid for three years, after which the Department was required to once again demonstrate it has continued to comply with all the policies dictating its operations. On February 21, 2012, February 25, 2015 and February 21, 2018 accreditation status was again awarded to Public Safety. Indian River Shores Public Safety has now had Commission of Florida Law Enforcement accreditation for 12 consecutive years, as the Agency continually demonstrates that it its in compliance with the level of professional standards required by the state.

Captain Mark Shaw is responsible for all law enforcement and fire rescue activities including planning, administrative management, personnel matters, and equipment maintenance. Reporting to Captain Shaw are three sergeants, Shawn Hoyt, Bart Crosby, and Tim Dempsey with the individual responsibility of managing each of the three shifts. Also reporting to Captain Shaw is Detective Sergeant Kipp Benhamd, Community Liaison Officer Albert Iovino. Public Safety Officer Chris Beaumont is responsible for all training activities throughout the Department which includes paramedic recertification, firearms, pre-fire planning and all ongoing training which is essential to maintain a high level of professionalism and readiness within the Department.
