Gonzales is a city in Ascension Parish. The county seat of Ascension is Donaldsonville. Gonzales had an estimated population as of 2016 of 10,832. Gonzales is the Jambalaya Capital of the World and holds an annual Jambalaya Festival once a year.
The original settlers of Gonzales were Spanish and French, and they settled amidst the Houma Indians who live in the area. The city received its name from Tee-Joe Gonzales who had a general store and post office both named Gonzales in the area. The name of the community was changed from Edenborn to Gonzales to match the post office name.
During Hurricane Katrina Gonzales’s fairgrounds became the HSUS and other animal rescue groups’ headquarters. The location housed pets picked up from New Orleans until their owners came to find them.
The 922nd Horizontal Engineer Company is housed in Gonzales. This Company is part of the 769th Engineer Battalion located in Baton Rouge.
The area is home to more than a dozen antebellum homes, numerus restaurants featuring Jambalaya, and cozy boutique shops.
