Grand Coteau, Louisiana Jail and Mugshot Information

Grand Coteau is a town in St. Landry Parish and the Parish Seat is Operlousas. The estimated population in 2016 is 939. The city is a center for local farming and is part of the Opelousas-Eunice Micropolitan Statistical Area. In the 1770s Grand Coteau was known as Buzzard Prairie and was a stopping stop for travelers between Washington, Louisiana and St. Martinville, Louisiana. The community had two bakeries, a millinery and a cobbler shop plus six bars and nine brothels.
In 1821, two nuns of the Religious of the Sacred Heart founded a convent and a school that became the Academy of the Sacred Heart. In 1837 The Jesuits built St. Charles College and the area was named Grand Coteau (the great hill). There are many examples of Victorian architecture still in Grand Coteau. Grand Coteau is known as the Holy Land of South Louisiana.
In 1863 the Campaign of the Teche saw the 999th infantry regiment of Illinois in several skirmishes in Louisiana. A detachment of the regiment was ended in the Battle of Grand Coteau. By November 9 the the regiment had moved on to New Orleans. Thousands of Union troops were camped in the fields surrounding the Academy during the Civil War, but they had enough respect not to harm the school.

The jail is a medium custody adult jail. The facility has a total number of 220 beds. Inmates an receive mail by addressing the mail to the Inmate at St. Landry Parish Jail. Call to ensue the inmate is still incarcerated in the jail at: 337-948-6516.

Visitors may visit no more than one time per week. Monday through Saturday. Sign in 15 minutes prior to scheduled visits. Have identification and wear proper clothing. If you are late for you scheduled visit schedule, you will not be allowed to visit your inmate.

Inmates can receive mail through the US Postal Service only.
