At the 2010 census the town’s population was 1,296. During the summer the population is over 20,000. Grand Isle’s main street is the seaside start of Louisiana Highway1.
Grand Isle is right in the path of hurricanes that hit the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Katrina hit Grand Isle for two days and destroyed homes and camps along the entire island and destroyed the bridge that connected the island to the mainland.

Fishing is an important part of Grand Isle’s economy and culture. There are more than 280 species of fish in the surrounding waters. Grand Isle is Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island. Grand Isle, LA was the home of the pirate Jean Lafitte and many artifacts of his pirating day are still in Grand Isle.. Grand Isle is much more than just history, it’s the first line of defense to destructive hurricanes that batter the Louisiana coast line.

Grand Isle includes seven miles of public beaches. Visit Elmer’s Island Wildlife Refuse , a 230-acre tract of barrier beachfront located on the southwest tip of Jefferson Parish. You can also visit Grand Isle State park at the east end of the island. Grand Isle State Parks includes beaches, a 400-ft fishing pier, nature trails and overnight camping.
