Gretna was settled in 1836 and was originally called Mechanicsham. It was originally a rail stop on the Mississippi River with a ferry that cross the River to New Orleans. Zatarain’s, a spice maker, was founded in Gretna in1889.
During the confusion of Hurricane Katrina those who attempted to flee from New Orleans by walking over the Crescent City Connection bridge over the Mississippi River were turned back at gunpoint by the city of Gretna Police and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Gretna hosts the Ultimate Family Event, the Heritage Festival that incudes celebrity performers, vendors, booths, and fun. Don’t forget to visit the Jefferson Memorial Arch, built in 1923.
