Harahan is in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and the Parish seat is Gretna. Harahan is a suburb of New Orleans and the population estimated in 2016 was 9,360. One of the most prestigious structures in Harahan is Harahan elementary. It is a building on the Department of Interior’s National Register of Historic Places.
Harahan is in a bend of the Mississippi River about 10 miles north of New Orleans. In the beginning, Harahan was a small village of abut 400 residents. There were two streets in Harahan and a street car system, the Orleans-Kenner Railway or the OK Line operated in Harahan.
In 1920 a large white house was built for gambling and prostitution. To stop the development of this establishment the citizens appealed to the governor and urged incorporation. The building no longer exists.
In 1935 the Huey P. Long Bridge, was the first bridge in Louisiana to span the Mississippi River. The construction caused harm to Harahan and the ferrying process was stopped. Many workers living in Harahan lost their jobs.
The area is mainly farmland and the city itself was incorporated in 1953 when the census reached 5,022.
