Jackson was founded in 1815 and was the seat of Justice for Feliciana Parish before the parish was divided into East and West. The town was once a major commercial center and center for education. It was known as Athens of the South. There were many black bears who crossed nearby Thompson Creek and the town was originally call Bear Corners. It eventually was renamed for General Andrew Jackson who camped here with his troops after the 1815 Battle of New Orleans.

The East Louisiana State Hospital (Louisiana Insane Asylum) was founded in Jackson in 1847. The Dixon Correctional Institute is in Jackson, LA. There is a branch of Baton Rouge Community College in Jackson LA.
