Jeanerette is a city in Iberia Parish, Louisiana and the parish seat of Iberia is New Iberia. Jeanerette is known as Sugar City and the population at the 2016 estimated census was 5,447. Jeanerette is home to two third African Amerian and man of these people are Creoles of color.
Jeanerette is part of the Lafayette, Louisiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also one of the 22 parishes located in the Acadiana region with a high proportion of Francophones. During the 19th century and along Bayou Teche is a settlement of free Creoles of color. This area is now known as Grand Marais. These people were descended from African and European ancestors, still speak French, and maintain an intriguing way of life.
Sugar cane is a major factor in the economy of Jeanerette. Until the 21st century there were three active sugar mills, but now they are closed. Jeanerette is the home of equipment manufactures for cultivation, harvesting, and processing sugarcane. Oil, natural gas, salt and carbon black, a garment distribution center and fishing are now the economic factors of Jeanerette.
