Kaplan is a city in Vermillion Parish and the parish seat of Vermillion Parish is. At the 2016 estimated census the population of Kaplan was 4,619. The city is part of the Abbeville Micropolitan Statistical Area. Kaplan is 22 miles SW of Lafayette, LA and 132 miles W of New Orleans.
In 1896 the Holy Rosary Catholic Church was established in this European-Amerian settlement. Many of the residents were Acadian and the main language was French. The city was named after Abrom Kaplan who bought the Jim Tod Plantation in 1901.

On July 14, 1906, the city of Kaplan celebrated it’s first Bastille Day, a French celebration. Try waterskiing, sailing, boating and picnicking at the Cypremort Point State park. Visit the Lafayette natural History Museum and Planetarium the Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance and Vermillionville. Shell Keys National Wildlife Refuge is accessible from Kaplan.
