Krotz Springs Louisiana is a town in St. Landry parish. The parish seat of St. Landry is Operlousas. Krotz Springs is on the Atchafalaya River and is part of the Opelousas-Eunice Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population in the 2016 estimated census was 1,204.
About the turn of the 20th century, W.W. Krotz, an Ohio native, bought 20,000 acres of woodland around the Atchafalaya Basin and began a sawmill. A settlement grew up around the saw mill and was called Latania after the bayou of the same name. Krotz thought he was sitting on an untapped pool of oil, so he put down the first oil well in St. Landry Parish. What he struck was water and he began a spring that was used to supply water for the sawmill town. Krotz found his “oil” fortune He sold his spring water throughout the country. As a result once a post office was established in the town, the named changed to Krotz Springs.
