Lecompte is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana and the parish seat is. Lecompte is part of the Alexandria, Louisiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2016 census, the population was 1,186. The town is approx. 200 miles from Houston, TX.
The town is named after a famous race horse owned by the Wells family who lived on a plantation south of the town. The horse’s name was LeComte. He won races at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. A railroad sign on the side of the train depot years after the towns development added a “p”. The town has been called Lecompte ever since.
Unfortunately the horse, LeComte, was bought by an Englishman for large sum after winning a race, but he died during the voyage back to England. He caught a cold and did not get good care.
Lecompte hold the Lecompte Pie Festival every year the 1st weekend in October. The city is knowns as the Pie capital of Louisiana.
