Mamou is a town in Evangeline Parish. The parish seat of Evangeline is Ville Platte. At the 2016 census, the population in Mamou was 3,187. Mamou is in south-central Evangeline Parish and is 1.4 square miles in total area.
The city is named after the French work for mammoth (Mamou). The original village was one square mile, and lots sold for $50.00. The town was incorporated in 1911. Cotton was the major crop for many years on the Louisiana prairie. In 1915 the town had four cotton gins producing thousands of bales of cotton. However, the decline in cotton led to the local farmers growing rice, which is now the major crop of Mamou.
The town is in the heart of Louisiana’s Cajun country and is famous for music and musicians. The town called itself “The Cajun Music Capital of the World.” Every year the town holds a Courir de Mardi Gras.
