Marksville is a city in the parish of Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, it is the parish seat of Avoyelles Parish. The population at the 2016 estimated census was 5,518. Marksville houses Louisiana’s first land-based casino, Paragon Casino Resort. It opened in 1994 and is operated by the Tunic-Biloxi Indian Tribe.
Marksville is named after Marc Eliche, a Jewish Italian immigrant who established a trading post in the area. Marksville’s population has numerous Cajun families as well as European Amerian and African Americans. Marksville was the center of a rural area cotton plantations. After the African slave traded ended in 1808, planters bought African Amerian slave through the domestic slave trade and used them as workers. At least one million slaves were transported to the Deep South form the Upper South in the first half of the 19th century.
Solomon Northrup, a free black from Saratoga Springs, NY was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana. He was held for 12 years on plantation in Avoyelles Parish. He was freed in 1853 with the help of Marksville officials. Northrup’s memoir is the basis of the 2013 movie 12 Years a Slave.
