Th village received its name from Maurice Villine and native of Savoy, France. He came to America in 1855 and sold goods in New Orleans, New Iberia, and Milton. In1889 Maurice donated land to a church and rectory in Maurice and the town was incorporated in 1911.

The jail was constructed in 1981 and has a capacity of 150 inmates. It has a full-time staff of 35.
Visiting hours are evening and weekends. Visits are limited to 30-60 minutes each one or twice per week. Mail can be sent to an inmate via the US Postal Service. Make sure the inmates full name is on the envelope.
