Built in 1984, the Tangipahoa Parish Prison can house a maximum capacity of 504 men and 22 women prisoners. A majority of the prisoners held at the jail are parish detainees awaiting court appearances.
Trustees of the jail perform janitorial services at the parish courthouse, firing range and handle the cleaning and laundry chores at the prison. In addition, there is a trustee crew that is assigned to the Tangipahoa Parish School Board and another group of trustees periodically works on “litter crews” to keep the parish roads and highways clean.

The prison features up-to-date security equipment with the campus surrounded by an eight-foot fence covered with razor wire. All persons entering the facility are subject to search and are not allowed to bring in handbags or other personal items.

Patrol

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Patrol Deputies are the most highly visible team within the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office. These law enforcement deputies are responsible for responding to over 50,000 calls a year to handle nuisance complaints, domestic violence cases, armed robberies and homicides. These Deputies are also proactive in patrolling the residential areas throughout our parish. TPSO Patrol Deputies additionally respond to automobile accidents and traffic incidents. Because of their presence on our interstates and roadways, many of the parish’s drug arrests are the result of our Criminal Deputies who have been trained on how to detect signs of drug presence and abuse. In addition, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Patrol division provides assistance to neighboring municipalities, assisting with major investigations or serious incidents

Special Response Team

The TPSO’s Special Response Team (SRT) is available on a 24-hour basis, responding to calls of barricaded suspects, hostage situations, sniper/active shooter situations, riot and crowd control, dignitary/site protection, and high-risk prisoner security. In addition, SRT assists other Sheriff’s Divisions during the service of arrest and search warrants in high-risk or hazardous situations.

K-9 Unit

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office K9 Division handles a wide variety of tasks in protecting the citizens of Tangipahoa Parish. The K9 Unit has been an ever growing division within the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office. In 2004, Sheriff Daniel H. Edwards evolved this unit into a full time component of the sheriff’s office. Currently, this division is comprised of five specially trained deputies, their K9 companions and three bloodhound dogs.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office maintains a professional K9 Unit which has proved to be a valuable asset to the daily operations of the sheriff’s office. The division consists of four patrol dogs, three bloodhounds, and one narcotics detection dog. Through the efforts of Sheriff Edwards, one K9 team is scheduled twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week to protect the citizens of Tangipahoa Parish. The K9 unit is called upon to fulfill many tasks within the department. Their services include criminal apprehension, building searches, area searches, evidence detection, narcotics detection, tracking missing persons, tracking fleeing suspects, crowd control and for protecting the lives of their handlers and other law enforcement counter parts.

Investigative Operations

General Investigations is comprised of detectives who are extensively trained in all aspects of criminal investigations. Some of the detectives have received special training involving computer crimes, internet crimes, domestic assaults and sexual assaults on children. Criminal activities which are assigned to this division involve crimes against persons and property, commercial and residential breaking and entering, larcenies, robberies, rapes, murders, white collar crimes, computer crimes and child abuse.

Reserve Unit

The Tangipahoa Parish Reserve Deputies are volunteers who complete the mandated training at the Reserve Academy. Following successful completion of the Reserve Academy, the Reserve Deputies are allowed to carry a weapon and make arrests. Reserve deputies are used to supplement full-time deputies and are subject to the same rules and regulations as full-time employees of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff¹s Office.

Mounted Reserve Unit

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Mounted Division began in 2006 under the leadership and direction of Sheriff Daniel Edwards. Sheriff Edwards along with Jill Hutcheson, the Mounted Divisions’ leader, worked together on a strategy to make the horses that were owned by TPSO team members, beneficial for our community.

Criminal Records Division

The Criminal Records division is responsible for documenting all the reports from deputies regarding criminal offenses, accidents and arrests. The staff is responsible for attending court to document proceedings pertaining to cases that go to trial. They also handle all requests for criminal and background checks as well as requests from insurance companies regarding burglaries, automobile accidents and citations.

Communications Division

Communications is the key to a successful sheriff¹s department in regards to emergency situations and response time. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff¹s Office Communications Divisions receives and responds to over 45,000 calls and 55,000 ­ 80,000 radio communications per month. Many times, the Communications Division is the first contact with local law enforcement officials in times of an emergency.

Civil Processing Division

The Civil Processing Division of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff¹s Office processes all paperwork associated with court orders and civil warrants, which includes suits on open notes, primarily for mortgage payments, and orders pertaining to felony charges and child custody transfers.
