The Sulphur Police Department has been a pioneer in the area of state-of-the-art technology. Communications

The Communications Division is made up of 9 officers. They are the first point of contact when a call is placed to the Sulphur Department. Not only do they answer the telephones, they are also responsible for all Department Radio Traffic as well as monitoring the CAER Radio, Sulphur Fire Department and Cal Cam Ambulance.
They are also responsible for the use of the N.C.I.C.(National Crime Information Center) computer system. This system is the link to the Department Of Motor Vehicles and the F.B.I. criminal files. The Communication Officers go through a 16 week in house training period as well Powerphone, A.P.C.O., and the Calcasieu Parish Training Academy.

Crime Scene ID

The Crime Scene ID Division is responsible for the collection, packaging, and processing of all major crime scenes in the City of Sulphur. The Crime Scene ID division will respond to all unnatural deaths, whether homicide or suicide, all rapes, most maiming complaints, and all business robberies. The Crime Scene ID Division also assists Uniform Patrol with the processing of burglaries, fatality accidents, arson cases, and mass fatalities. Sgt. Jason Gully and Evidence Tech Natalie Hanson of the Crime Scene ID Division also offers training to Uniform Patrol and various areas of Crime Scene work. The Crime Scene Specialists use a variety of scientific disciplines to ensure that evidence is properly collected, packaged, and processed for later analysis.

Detectives

The mission of the Detective Division is to provide the effective investigation of crimes while apprehending criminals, assisting crime victims and protecting the community. Members of the Detective Division are responsible for investigating homicides, felonious assaults, child abuse, sexual assaults, gang crimes, kidnapping, missing persons, hate crimes as well as threats and weapons violations. Corrections

The Corrections Division of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is composed of two facilities: The Calcasieu Correctional Center and Calcasieu Sheriff’s Prison of which the Women’s Correctional Services building is an annex.
These detention facilities were constructed to provide detention, operations, and related services necessary for the protection of society. They provide incarceration as an appropriate deterrent to the commission of crime, are a method of guidance and treatment for incarcerated offenders, and assists the judicial system with evaluation tools and information for use when sentencing offenders.

Investigations

Special Services

Crime Lab

The Southwest Louisiana Criminalistics Laboratory is a regional crime lab that serves a five parish area (Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis). The lab employs eight full time analysts, an evidence custodian, and a director. 5,000 cases were submitted to the laboratory in 2012.

Aviation Unit

The mission of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) Aviation Unit is to provide aerial support for the organization’s patrol, investigative and administrative needs and to support other public agencies in Southwest Louisiana to secure a safer environment for the commerce and well being of the citizens. The goal of the Aviation Unit is to enhance the safety of the community and Sheriff’s Office personnel through the strategic deployment of airborne technologies. The Unit strives to increase the safety of officers, as well as improve their effectiveness and efficiency through the timely use of properly equipped fixed-wing or rotary aircraft. The Unit also uses rotorcraft and powered parachute aircraft as needed to supplement its fixed-wing capability.

Forensic Investigations

The FIU is responsible for the documentation of major crime scenes including, but not limited to, homicides, suicides, sexual batteries, armed robberies, shootings, and suspicious deaths. Using the latest technology in different fields such as video and still photography the unit records details of a scene for future investigation, analysis and preparation for court review. The members of the unit are continuously researching new technology. The unit works hand in hand with investigators throughout the case from initial arrival at the scene to the courtroom.

Evidence

The Evidence Department maintains the physical chain of custody for criminal investigations. The Evidence custodians work daily with investigators, lab analyst and the District Attorney’s office concerning evidence issues. The custodians also maintain a constant inventory on all of the approx. 50 thousand items that are currently being stored.

Warrants

The Warrants Division is tasked with housing all warrants referred to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office for service by other agencies and court systems within Calcasieu Parish. Agencies outside of Calcasieu, but within Louisiana, and from other states refer warrants for service as well. This division also facilitates the extradition process on behalf of the 14th Judicial District Court System.

Narcotics

The Drug Enforcement Department of the Sheriff’s Office is the largest member agency in the C.A.T. Task Force. All of the local law enforcement agencies within Calcasieu Parish have combined resources and work together to fight the war on drugs.

Reserve

You probably have seen them around before, at Contraband Days, the Rabbit Festival, at the mall during the holidays, and other community events. They work patrol, stakeouts, and are on the waterways. They are bus drivers, financial planners, plant operators, construction workers, and teachers. They work side by side with other divisions of the Sheriff’s Office and are over 70 deputies strong. They are the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division.

Vice Department

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Vice Department is a group of specialized Detectives with training in both overt and covert operations. The department handles cases involving organized crime, prostitution, gambling, child pornography, internet pornography, prescription fraud, unlawful sales of tobacco and alcohol, and misrepresentation of age.

Photography

The Sheriff’s Office Photographic Services serves more than 25 different agencies. The photo section serves as the hub for multimedia services for the entire southwest Louisiana area.

Enforcement

Patrol

The enforcement division is responsible for basic law enforcement operations. They enforce the law, protect property and life, and keep peace within Calcasieu Parish.
Each patrol shift has trained traffic investigators. They investigate all traffic accidents on parish roads (including fatal accidents). They enforce the traffic laws on parish roads, state highways, and city streets. They have one hit and run investigator and five accident reconstruction investigators.

ACT Team

ACT-T, is a diverse group of Sheriff’s office employees who “fill in the void” when it comes to numerous tasks that the Sheriff’s Office is faced with. Made up of several dedicated “full time” employees and augmented by other departmental employees who have other full time responsibilities, the ACT-T unit is comprised of officers who have extensive training and experience in handling some of the most difficult, complex, and routinely dangerous situations. Often, the unit simply handles task that simply don’t fit the job descriptions of other divisions.

K-9

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office has long since relied on the use of canines for many different functions. Not until recently has the K-9 department taken on a more pro-active approach to the use of our canine friends.

The Sheriff’s Office currently has a training manager who is responsible for maintaining training, certification, and the overall well being of the animals. The training manger coordinates the training for all of the Sheriff’s canines, as well as, the agencies attached to the Combined Anti-Drug (CAT)Task Force. The K-9 teams train on a weekly basis in order to stay conditioned for the tasks they perform on the streets and on-duty.

Marine Enforcement Unit

The deputies in the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Marine Division are dedicated to providing the highest standard of law enforcement services to the citizens of Calcasieu Parish, along with visitors, on our waterways. They patrol more than 325 square miles of waterways in Calcasieu Parish. The #1 goal is public safety on the waterways of Calcasieu Parish.

Civil Division

The Civil Division serves and executes civil processes and all other orders as directed by the courts in accordance with Louisiana Revised Statutes as well as assisting other departments and officers within the Sheriff’s Office when called upon.

The civil division consists of twenty-one (21) post-certified, sworn deputies and eight (8) civil sworn deputies. The post-certified deputies execute all civil and criminal documents as ordered by the court, including, but not limited to, citations and petitions, subpoenas, criminal summons, etc. Each of these deputies is assigned to a geographical area (zone) based on population and location within the parish. Calcasieu Parish is divided into seventeen (17) zones.
