The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety provides police services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The agency responds to approximately 10,000 calls for service each year and participates in numerous special events providing traffic safety and crowd control/security. In addition to responding to police calls, officers are cross-trained as firefighters. As a result, they also respond to medicals and fires, which account for approximately 1,300 additional calls each year.
Officers work twelve (12) hour shifts and each officer works 7 days in a two-week pay period. One officer staffs the fire apparatus and the remaining officers work police/fire duties from their patrol vehicle within one of four (4) districts. There are a total of four (4) teams, two (2) day shifts and two (2) night shifts. Each shift is under the direct supervision of a sergeant.
Grand Haven Public Safety has a staff of 49 employees, including 35 sworn officers whose mission is to protect the community and provide a myriad of other police services. The City of Grand Haven enjoys a low crime rate as a result of the department’s strong emphasis on crime deterrence through highly visible patrols including foot patrol and bicycle patrol as well as the routine motorized mobile patrol. An emphasis is also placed on education pertaining to crime prevention, traffic safety, drug and alcohol abuse, and child safety programs at all school levels and in presentations to business and civic organizations.
The Investigative Unit is comprised of one detective, one patrol officer who divides his time between road patrol and investigations, one fire marshal and one officer assigned to the West Michigan Enforcement Team. WEMET is an undercover narcotics concept team under the direct supervision of the Michigan State Police. The team is comprised of officers from numerous agencies throughout Ottawa County, GHDPS has been participating in this worthwhile endeavor for several years.

The primary goal of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division (Jail) is to insure the safety of inmates, corrections personnel, and residents of Ottawa County. This is accomplished by detaining inmates in a secure manner, in the least restrictive setting possible, given inmate classification. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division strives to provide all inmates with humane living conditions and to protect inmate rights consistent with the United States Constitution, the Michigan Constitution, the laws of the State of Michigan and Department of Corrections guidelines.
The days, times and length of visits are determined by an inmate’s classification and behavior. A weekly visit is made by appointment only. Inmates are limited to 3 persons per visit.
