The Wyoming Police Department was built on 5 acres of woodlands, which were formerly a part of the Rogers Farm. Thanks to the generous support of the Rogers family, the City of Wyoming received land for Pinery Park, the Senior Center, Veterans Memorial Gardens and the Police facility. Aesthetically, the building’s glass curtain front reflects the natural beauty of the park setting, while respecting the serenity of the adjacent Veteran’s Memorial Gardens. Its comfortable appearance and natural landscape serves to enhance the character of the surrounding neighborhoods.

The facility covers 54,000 square feet on two levels and includes patrol, investigation and administrative offices, cross-training fitness center, ergonomic office environment, training room able to accommodate 110 personnel and enhanced forensic facilities and systems.

Patrol Unit

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety’s Patrol Services Division is supervised by Captain Snyder who oversees two Squad Commanders, Lt. Zuiderveen and Lt. Steffes. The Squad Commanders each supervise three sergeants who have seven officers on their squads. Officers work ten hour shifts on days, afternoons, or nights.

The investigative division offers specialized services and responsibilities. The office is located on the second floor of the Wyoming Department of Public Safety. The Wyoming Department of Public Safety embraces a community policing philosophy and organizational strategy that includes crime prevention and community involvement as an integral part of day-to-day operations. The goal of this philosophy is to educate our community in detecting and responding to situations that could result in criminal activity or decreased quality of life. The department strives to prevent crime and disorder, rather than simply reacting to reports of crimes after they have occurred.

School Resources Officers

School Resource Officers (SROs) are sworn law enforcement officers responsible for providing security and crime prevention services in schools. They work closely with school administrators in an effort to create a safer environment.

Metro High School Police Academy

In cooperation with the area police departments, the WYPD participates in an annual summer Metro High School Police Academy. The one-week, 50-hour program exposes recent high school graduates to a police academy learning environment modeled after the Michigan Council of Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Contact Sgt. The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of organized, law enforcement-affiliated crime and drug prevention programs.

Neighborhood Watch

Strong police and community partnerships are a critical component of the Wyoming Police Department’s community-oriented policing and problem-solving model. Over the past few years, Wyoming Neighborhood Watch groups have developed as highly effective tools in the detection, reporting and prevention of crime and criminal activity.

Mission Statement

“The Sheriff of Kent County and the Correctional Facility staff are dedicated to the safety and security of the community. The operations of this facility will be governed by the applicable State and Federal laws while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and service to the community.

Responsible inmate behavior will be encouraged by providing fair, impartial and humane treatment for all inmates. The safety and well being of all those incarcerated will be an ongoing objective.

The employees of this facility will be provided with the training, support and supervision necessary to keep a safe and professional environment.”

The Correctional Facility is a system of facilities that house the inmates committed to the custody of the Sheriff. In addition to these, the jail always has a small number of inmates out on Writs that are temporarily lodged in other jails or prisons.

The main jail employs the podular and dormitory housing designs to accommodate approximately 1,100 inmates of all security classifications. The facility is programmed for internal security to consist of a combination of direct and indirect supervision.

They are one of the few facilities in the country to have three state-of the-art integrated computer systems working simultaneously. We employ a Jail Management System which ties in with our live scan Identix fingerprint and Video Mugshot systems.
