The Corrections Division of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office consists of the Adult Detention Center, Work Center and County Work Farm. The Corrections Division is under the administrative supervision of the Warden. The present annual operating budget for the division is approximately 9.5 million dollars and the total number of staff assigned to the Corrections Division is 225, the majority of whom are correctional officers who work in direct contact with inmates.

The present Harrison County Adult Detention Center was completed in 1990 at a cost of $20 million dollars. The facility’s design capacity is 760 beds, but it has exceeded that figure throughout most of its history and it is the largest county jail in the State of Mississippi, actually reaching a population of some 1400 prior to Hurricane Katrina. Concerted efforts and intensive planning by Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officials have brought the average daily population down in the last two years to between 800 and 900.

The detention center houses a wide array of detainees, including felons, misdemeanor offenders, males, females, juveniles charged as adults, state prisoners, federal prisoners and persons awaiting commitment to mental health facilities. Approximately eighty percent of the inmate population consists of those who are pre-trial status.

The inmate work center, located on Lorraine Road, houses between 140 and 160 sentenced state prisoners. These inmates work at various job sites throughout the county and its municipalities, saving the county’s taxpayers several million dollars annually. The inmate work center has proven to be an extremely valuable and cost effective resource for the county, providing a labor force that is highly skilled in a variety of job classes. This program is operated with the assistance and cooperation of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, and it is an excellent example of the best kind of local and state government partnership.

Enforcement Division

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department is a diverse organization of professional men and women. Covering nine hundred and seventy-six square miles and five municipalities, we work in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies to protect the lives and property of each citizen.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division consists of four teams of fully certified law enforcement officers who are responsible for patrolling all unincorporated areas of Harrison County. All patrol officers are uniformed and drive fully marked vehicles.

Narcotics Division

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division consists of eleven highly trained Investigators. Eight of these Investigators are tasked with working street level Narcotics and the three are assigned to Federal Task Forces that include DEA/HIDTA, U.S. Marshal’s Service and ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms).

Criminal Interdiction Patrol

Proactive traffic enforcement is an effective strategy used to protect the public from the devastation caused by drug abuse, street and highway traffic-related death and injury, illegal trafficking in and possession of weapons and apprehension of fugitives. Proactive traffic enforcement is used to promote and maintain an orderly and law abiding society.

K9 Patrol Division

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office utilizes K-9 Patrol dogs in several divisions within the agency. Typically Belgium Malinios, German Shepherds and Labradors are used as service canines. These highly trained canines are used in protection, Narcotics detection, search and rescue and the apprehension of a fleeing suspect. The Sheriff’s Office has one Labrador assigned to the School Resource Division trained in detection tobacco and tobacco products.

Mounted Unit

The mounted unit works in partnership with the community to provide search and rescue services in a responsible manner through innovation, leadership, and the cooperation of dedicated people.

Marine Patrol Division

The Marine Patrol Division of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to providing a safe boating environment to citizens and tourists using the waterways of Harrison County. This division is staffed with trained Deputies who provide services related to Marine law enforcement, boating safety, search and rescue and recovery. The Marine Division assists with operations conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Park Service, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the Mississippi Department of Fish and Wildlife.
