The Gastonia Police Department is headed by Chief of Police Robert C. Helton, Jr. The GPD employs 174 police officers and 32 civilian employees. The Criminal & Special Investigations Division is comprised of several sections including detectives who investigate criminal cases, ID detectives who gather evidence from crime scenes, and the ABC Enforcement which is responsible for enforcing laws governing the sale of alcohol and tobacco.

The Gaston County Jail is the facility utilized by the Gastonia Police Department. The facility holds male state pretrial detainees and convicted inmates as well as pretrial federal inmates from the United States Marshal’s Office. The jail has a total bed capacity of 408 inmates. All inmates are allowed visitation, via video and in person.
