The Mount Vernon Police Department currently provides law enforcement services with three shifts of officers, seven days a week, twenty-four hours per day. The department currently employs 22 officers, 1 SRO officer, 4 detectives, as well as the Chief and Captain, Administrative Supervisor, 2 administrative support staff and 1 Records Clerk.

The Mount Vernon Police Department also has an ESU team. This team consists of a group of elite, specially trained police officers that are called out and utilized under specific circumstances.

The department utilizes a “speed” trailer, placed on various streets at various times, to enable drivers in recognizing their speed. Our goal is to help drivers become aware of the speed limit, of their speed and to ultimately encourage compliance with the speed regulations.

The Mount Vernon Police Department is also a member of the METRICH Task Force. A 10-county joint drug enforcement team. They are dedicated to getting drugs off the streets.
The City of Mount Vernon is a relatively safe community, however, like most cities there will be criminal activity that occurs. The Administrative Supervisor for the City of Mount Vernon Police Department handles the following services (fees apply): Taxi Cab licenses, Solid Waste Hauler permits and fingerprinting. The Administrative Supervisor also maintains the impound lot and is charged with disposal of vehicles that are not claimed.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is assigned to the Mount Vernon Middle School, High School and the Knox County Career Center during the school year. During the time when school is out he is utilized on patrol with concentration on drug interdiction.

The Police department has brought back bicycle patrol. Each shift will have officers who are bicycle trained and will focus on the parks, bicycle path and residential areas. Bicycles add another tool to reduce neighborhood crime while allowing better interaction with the public. Bicycle Patrol will also assist in education and public relations.

The police department is responsible for “parking” enforcement. We employ a part-time Parking Enforcement Officer and a computerized record of all violations is handled by the Records Clerk. Parking tickets can be paid at the lobby window during normal business hours. Disputes will be handled by the Chief of Police or his designee. The Mayor’s Office has final say over disputes at this time.

The Administration office employs two Executive Secretaries who manage all of the department’s payroll, and all secretarial functions for the Administration.
