The North Canton Police Department is made up of twenty four full-time and one part-time sworn police officers, and seven full-time and four part-time communications dispatchers. The services provided by the sworn officers of the department include patrol operations, traffic enforcement, investigations, community policing and a special response team. The Communications Division of the North Canton Police Department handles telephone calls (911 and routine) and dispatching for the North Canton Police and Fire Department /Emergency Medical Services (NCFD / EMS).

The Jail Division is charged with the safe and secure operation of the Stark County Jail. The division is staffed by individuals serving is several different capacities such as Deputy Sheriff’s, Corrections Officers, Drug & Alcohol Counselors, Clerks, and Supervisors. In addition contract service employees for food, medical and mental health needs also make up the division as well as volunteers. These persons ensure the security of the jail and provide the wide array of services to the prisoners that are required by state and federal laws. Some of the services are: counseling, visitation, religious, commissary sales and library.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office has taken an aggressive lead in contracting many of these services to private companies in the community that once were performed by Sheriff’s Office employees. The medical / mental health and food services are under contract to vendors and Deputies once assigned there have been re-assigned to either jail security or law enforcement duties. This concept has been proven to be cost effective and allots our limited time and resources to be devoted to the core mission of the Sheriff’s Office.

Prisoners confined in the jail include those charged with every type of criminal offense from the most minor traffic charge to those facing capital punishment. This includes prisoners awaiting trial or sentencing, transfer to a state institution, fugitives awaiting return to other states, and those inmates awaiting probation or parole revocations. Also confined in the jail are those persons committed by any of the counties’ three municipal courts, Common Pleas Courts and Domestic Relations Court.

The Stark County Jail is a 24 hour a day booking facility for all law enforcement agencies in Stark County.

The jail operational capacity is 501 inmates. There were 9,154 individuals booked into the Stark County Jail in 2013. That is 6,939 males and 2,215 females. Persons sentenced to the county jail may remain up to two years. However, the average time spent in the county jail based on bookings was 19 days.

Open Records Request in North Canton, Ohio

The Record Room is currently staffed by seven (7) Information Clerks and an Administrative Clerk. The Records Clerks are responsible for the safe and efficient maintaining of records of the day-to-day operation of the Canton Police Department. They collect, file and update these records daily in order to more accurately and expeditiously serve our department and the Criminal Justice Community as a whole, in criminal investigations. In addition, they aid in the public’s desire for information or explanation about the various aspects of its records. All of the calls for police service made to our department this year will, in some form or another, find their way to the Record Room and become a permanent part of our information system.

The Records Clerks answered thousands of phone calls, faxes and letters requesting copies of Incident Reports, Accident Reports and general information. They processed the thousands of case supplements typed by the City’s Word Processing Department, gleaning from them the names and personal data of the many victims, suspects, witnesses and arrested subjects who are tried by our courts for these crimes. They prepare the case files that reside in the Record Room for the City and County Prosecutors’ Offices before trial. They maintain the Criminal History files of the Canton Police Department for use by our various bureaus in their search, through these files, for possible suspects in crimes by matching their descriptions and methods of committing crimes to those descriptions and methods that have been entered in the past.
