Mission

The mission of the Springdale Police Department through its interaction with the community is to promote public safety and provide service through crime prevention, proactive and responsive patrols, investigations, and support services by maintaining a professional law enforcement organization.

Patrol

This is the largest and most recognizable unit within the police department. Their patrol officers are out in the community twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week; year round. They will be the first person from the police department you see when you request an officer to come to help you or when you call 911. Within the patrol force they have specially trained officers who are able to conduct advanced auto crash investigations. Their officers are well trained and more than adequately prepared to handle any law enforcement emergency that occurs. The patrol force has three primary shifts – each supervised by a lieutenant and a sergeant.

Investigations

Their investigative unit conducts all criminal investigations within the City of Springdale. The unit is led by a police sergeant. Investigators are assigned to work criminal cases ranging from theft to murder. One investigator is assigned to conduct investigations where primarily the suspect or victim is a juvenile. Additionally, the police department is part of a multi-jurisdictional drug task force.

Support Services

This group handles the administrative issues within the police department. Their clerical staff provides twenty-four hour service to the citizens. They answer the phone, speak to citizens at the window, handle financial transactions, data entry, and a myriad of tasks involving public records management. Their custodian keeps the building and grounds clean and serviceable. Their DARE officer teaches the DARE curriculum within our schools and serves as the department’s accreditation manager. Their Community Service Officer coordinates their department’s activities with their neighborhood watch groups, citizen’s police academy, and performs crime prevention services. Finally, the Chief and Assistant Chief provide administrative support to the police department.

The Jail Services Division is one of the Divisions overseen by the Sheriff’s Office and is managed by Major Chris Ketteman. He is responsible for the operation of all adult detention facilities in Hamilton County that are under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office. This includes 321 uniformed Corrections Officers, 33 uniformed Corrections Supervisors, and 83 support service personnel.

With an average daily inmate population of 1,524 and a total of 30,977 admissions in 2016, the local jail system is ranked among the top 25 largest in the nation. The average inmate incarceration length is 75 days.

The Hamilton County Justice Center, which was completed in 1985 at a cost of 54 million dollars, is the Division’s primary facility (with an inmate capacity of 1,240). In addition, the Division also maintains detention facilities at the Reading Road Facility (172 inmates), and the Woodburn Ave. facility (60 inmates), along with a comprehensive treatment program for multiple DUI offenders. Division personnel also provide for the security of inmates who are admitted to University Hospital and for juveniles who are to be tried as adults. The total Court Limited capacity is 1,472.

The Hamilton County Justice Center has been described as a “city within a city”. To provide for the general welfare of inmates, the Jail Services Division administers a wide variety of programs and services, including an accredited Health Services Section (medical, dental and psychiatric), a commercially equipped laundry, and an institutional kitchen that prepares 120,000 meals a month. Division Staff are also responsible for the supervision of inmate recreation programs and for the efficient operation of the commissary, mail, and property room services.
