The Tallmadge Police Department proudly serves this community of more than 17,000, just east of the City of Akron in Summit County. Operations Division

Police Administration consists of the Chief, an Administrative Assistant, and one Captain who serves as the Operations and Support Services Commander and Deputy Chief.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is dedicated to providing professional services in its continuing efforts to protect and serve the Citizens of Tallmadge. The Patrol Division provides 24 hour, 7 days a week patrol coverage, which is comprised of 18 sworn officers, including 4 Sergeants.

This group of men and women are the most visible component of any police department. They are the ones who respond to every call for service, ranging from crimes in progress to vehicle lockouts. Patrol officers also take incident reports, enforce traffic laws, investigate crashes and conduct extra patrols as requested. K9 “Axel” also serves on Patrol. SWAT Services are provided by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Detective Bureau

The Detective Bureau is comprised of a Detective Sergeant and General Assignment Detective. They are responsible for investigating those incidents which require more follow-up than patrol officers can provide. They also investigate suspicious circumstances and conduct drug investigations.

The Detective Bureau works closely with the Law Department and obtain search warrants and subpoenas when needed. The department is also part of the Middle Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network (MAGLOCLEN), the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP), US Marshall’s Violent Fugitive Task Force (NEOVFTC), Internet Crimes against Children (ICAC) and the Summit Metro Crash Response Team (SMcRT), to make better use of federal, state, county and other investigative resources.

In accordance with Section 341 of the Ohio Revised Code, the Summit County Sheriff is empowered as the keeper of the County Jail. A Chief of Corrections (Assistant Sheriff) is appointed by the Sheriff and is responsible for managing the jail facilities and assuring that all federal, state, and local laws are abided by.

The Sheriff’s Office provides security services for the Glenwood Jail, a satellite minimum security facility operated in conjunction with Oriana House.

The Summit County Jail, located at 205 East Crosier Street in Akron, Ohio, opened on August 1990. An addition to the jail that replaced the Akron Correctional Facility (formerly operated by the City of Akron and known as the “Workhouse”) opened on May 1, 1995.

In 2006 the jail obtained state approval to double bunk three additional pods which took the jail to the current capacity of 671 prisoners (564 male beds, 89 female beds, 18 optional beds which can be assigned as male, female, or juvenile beds depending on the inmate count).

The Summit County Jail is classified by the State of Ohio as a “full service” detention center. That means it is operated twenty-four (24) hours a day, three hundred sixty-five (365) days a year. It is, therefore, required that the facility be properly staffed for the safety and protection of the inmates and staff twenty-four (24) hours a day.

The Records Division consists of a full-time Administrative Clerk and 5 part-time Records Clerks. The Clerks greet visitors and answer incoming calls. They serve as deputy clerks for the Municipal Courts of Stow and Portage County and perform the duties of Jail Matron as needed. Police Clerks also process and file reports, citations and all other paperwork.
