This was much higher than the national average which was 2,837 crimes for every 100,000 individuals. It was also higher than the state average which was 3,117 crimes per 100k people. The Miami Police Department can be found on NW 2nd Avenue. It is headed by Chief of Police Jorge Colina. The department is comprised of several divisions including the Administration Division, Field Operations, Criminal Investigations, Special Investigations, and Internal Affairs. The entire department employs approximately 1022 sworn police officers.

The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitations Department operates three detention facilities which are used by the Miami Police Department. The Metro West Detention Center is located on NE 41st Street while the Pre-Trial Detention Center is located in NW 13th Street. The Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center is located in NW 41st Street. The visitation hours differ for each facility and will depend on the first letter of an inmate’s last name.
