The Chapel Hill Police Department is under the command of Police Chief Chris Blue. There are three divisions within the department – Patrol, Investigations, and Specialty Units. The Patrol Division is the largest unit of the CHPD. It provides a variety of services such as responding to calls for service, traffic enforcement, and alcohol enforcement. The Investigations Division perform follow-up investigations on crime reported to the CHPD. Within this division, there are specialized services – General Investigations, Narcotics and Vice, Juvenile Investigator, and Evidence, Forensics, and Identification Services.

The Orange County Detention Center is the facility used by the Chapel Hill Police Department. It is under the supervision of Major Randy Hawkins of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The jail has a total bed capacity of 129 inmates. Inmates are allowed to visit with family and friends on a weekly basis. All visitors must be on the visitation list provided by the inmate. Visitation for federal inmates are on Sundays from 12pm to 4pm. Visitation for all other inmates are on Saturdays from 12pm to 4pm. Visitation is limited to 15 minutes per inmate.
