The Detective Bureau is headed by Detective Sergeant Steve Davis, Detective Dan Shupe and Detective (Narcotics) Steve Kopniske.

The position of Detective is to investigate crimes and incidents that occur within the city. Oftentimes, people involved in crimes, either as victims or suspects, live outside the city limits. Miro is a German Shepherd who was born and raised in Germany. K-9 Miro was then imported to the USA specifically to become the K-9 of the VPD. K-9 Miro’s full name is Miro vom Schaaletal. Officer Holmes and K-9 Miro are certified as a “Duel Purpose K-9 Unit.” K-9 Miro primary role with the VPD is his use in detection of illegal narcotics. K-9 Miro is also used for the tracking of suspects, evidence recovery searches and patrol duties. Patrol duties include the areas of obedience, area and building searches, criminal apprehension and Officer protection. Marine Patrol

The Marine Patrols’ purpose is to ensure the safety of all people who are enjoying the waters of Lake Erie and the Vermilion River. This is done through educational programs, safety inspections, enforcement of Ohio laws and navigational rules, assisting boaters, patrolling regattas and special events, and performing search and rescue operations. The Marine Patrol also works closely with the United States Coast Guard and the Ohio Division of Watercraft, through mutual aid agreements.

The Corrections Division is the largest division of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office who’s main purpose is to maintain the safety and security of all persons incarcerated in the Lorain County Jail. The County jail is virtually a small city with in-house medical staff, mental health staff, and infirmary, on site full scale laundry, professional kitchen, library, maintenance and janitorial workers, chaplain and a contract commissary service.

The Corrections Division receives inmates from the police agencies in the county, the Ohio Department of Corrections for parole violations, the Probation Department for probation violations and the Lorain County Common Pleas & Municipal Courts.
