Plantation is a city in Broward County, Florida. Plantation is a principal city of the Miami Metropolitan Area. The city’s name comes from the previous part-owner of the land, the Everglades Plantation Company, and their attempts to establish a rice plantation in the area. The City of Plantation had a population of approximately 84,955 in the year 2016. Plantation was established in 1953. The City of Plantation uses a mayor-council form of government. The Plantation City Council consists of five members who are elected at-large. The Council structure has a President, a Pro Tem, an honorary Treasurer and two Council Members. The President and President Pro Tem are nominated and elected by a majority vote of all Council Members. The honorary Treasurer is appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. City Council meetings are typically held the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall (400 NW 73rd Avenue).
