Criminal Investigation Division

The Criminal Investigations Division consists of five Detective Sergeants and six Detectives, including WEMET (West Michigan Enforcement Team). The CID investigates major criminal complaints, computer-based crime as well as vice and narcotics activity. The CID is supervised by Captain Rick Walters.

Detectives conduct follow-up investigations of cases including: serious felonys, child abuse and criminal sexual conduct cases, juvenile crime referrals and arson. HPD also has a Detective who specializes in computer-based crime and computer forensics. The Criminal Investigations Division handles about 1,200 – 1,300 cases a year.

Patrol Division

The largest Division in Police Operations, what many consider the “backbone” of any Law Enforcement Agency, is the Patrol Division. Capt. Robert Buursma is responsible for the many TEAMs within this Division.

About 42 men and women, all officers and Sergeants, make up this Division. TEAMs within this Division include: the Traffic TEAM, K9 Team, Community Policing TEAM, Evidence Technicians, and the Reserve Police Officer Unit. Patrol Division officers respond to calls for assistance, traffic crashes, crimes in progress, enforce traffic laws, and interact with the public and promote partnerships to improve our community.

Services Division

The Services Division includes Records Management, Customer Service, FOIA requests, Booking/Lockup facility, Evidence Room Management and Building Maintenance. The Captain of Services is responsible for Public Information/Media Releases, the Cadet Program, Internships, and Recruiting and Hiring all staff.

The primary goal of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division (Jail) is to insure the safety of inmates, corrections personnel, and residents of Ottawa County. This is accomplished by detaining inmates in a secure manner, in the least restrictive setting possible, given inmate classification. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division strives to provide all inmates with humane living conditions and to protect inmate rights consistent with the United States Constitution, the Michigan Constitution, the laws of the State of Michigan and Department of Corrections guidelines.

Visits

The days, times and length of visits are determined by an inmate’s classification and behavior. A weekly visit is made by appointment only. Inmates are limited to 3 persons per visit. Appointments must be made through the Jail front office during normal business hours Monday – Friday. To set up a visit call (616) 786-4140. There will be no visits on Holidays.
