Gramercy is a town in St. James Parish, Louisiana. The parish seat is Convent. At the 2010 census the population was 3,613. Gramercy was originally a French and Indian trading post. By 1739, much of the area now known as Gramercy was sold to Joseph Delittle Dupart, the Commissioner of Indian Nations. It wasn’t until 1947 that the town was incorporated, and government settled down.
In 1895 a sugar mill was established in Gramercy and it became the Colonial Sugar Refinery in 1902. The site is now the Colonial Sugar National Historic District. Gramercy is also the home of Zapp’s Potato Chips and the Louisiana Sugar Refining, LLC. The Sugar Refining company operates a state-of-the-art sugar refinery with capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The refinery employs abut 150 people and takes advantage of all the sugar plantations in the area.
Cross the bridge near Gramercy and head west to Oak Alley Plantation. A quarter mile entrance canopy of 300-year old oak tress leads up to the plantation. Don’t forget to visit Houmas House Plantation which, at its peak, was the largest sugar producer in the United States. Houmas House is known for its gardens, wonderful interior, and museum featuring a vampire killing kit.
