Greenwood is in southern Caddo Parish and the County seat is Shreveport. At the 2010 census the population was 3,219 and population estimated in 2016 was 3,157. The town is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area and located 15 miles west of downtown Shreveport.
During the Civil War Battle of Mansfield in 1864, Confederate wounded were treated at the Dunn house built in 1840. This house is one of many houses in the area listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2004, Earnest Lampkins was elected as the first Black mayor of Greenwood. He received shots fired into his home and received threats during his tenure as mayor. He recently passed away.
Greenwood is known as the Gateway to Louisiana and located just two miles from the Texas state line.
