Houma is proud of its French and Cajun history. Originally the region was settled by French and Spanish colonists who traveled south through Bayou Lafourche. In the late 18th century many Acadians or Cajuns settle in the region. The Acadians had come from Nova Scotia.

The areas around Houma was originally quite isolated from the rest of Louisiana. The culture still includes the French language, Cajun cuisine, and Mardi Gras.
Downtown Houma is a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers a downtown walking tour and attractions like the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, The Folklife Culture Center and the Regional Military Museum. Visit Southdown Planation as well as other plantation homes along the Mississippi River.
