Jonesboro was originally an industrial mill town and found I the early 20th century. During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s whites fought to prevent African-Americans to gain their constitutional rights. The KuKluxKlan was very active in the area and conducted a “reign of terror” in 1964.
Jonesboro is known as The Heart of the Pines.

The jail has been in operations since October 2009. The center is a state-of-the-art correctional center and has the capacity to hold 1200 inmates. It employs 175 people.
