Kenner is the sixth largest city in Louisiana. It is the largest city in Jefferson parish. The parish seat of Jefferson is Harvey. Kenner is a suburb of New Orleans. At the 2016 estimate census, the population of Kenner was 67,089.

Kenner was originally inhabited by the Tchoupitoulas Indians. In 1855, Minor Kenner settled on land that consisted of three planation properties that the Kenner family had purchased. In the 1800s land north of Kenner was swampland.

Kenner began to grow in the late 1950s when developers began filling in the swampland in the northern half of the city. During the 1960s the construction of Interstate 10 and improvements to the Veterans Memorial Highway added to the development of Kenner.

In 1982, Pan A Flight 759 crashed in Kenner when a microburst forced it down. Eight people on the ground were killed and all 145 people aboard the aircraft died.
Kenner is one of the first cities to ban the use of Nike Products for their decision to feature Colin Kaepernick on its advising.

Kenner is also home to Louis Armstrong International Airport, the Pontchatrain Center (2nd largest convention center in the New Orleans area), Ochsner Medical Center a major hospital in the New Orleans area, and the Esplanade Mall which is one of the two largest malls in the Jefferson Parish. Visit Rivertown or the historic district located along the original main street of Old Kenner – where Williams Boulevard hits the Mississippi river.

The Jefferson Parish Correctional Center has a population possibility of 1,200 inmates.

Mail can be sent to an inmate via the US Postal System. Include the inmates name, ID # and the address of the corrections department.

You can visit an inmate if you are on an approved list. Note that you will need identification, a visitor’s pass and a schedule. If you miss you schedule or are late, yoy will not be allowed to visit an inmate that day. Call the corrections center at 504-363-5500 to schedule a visit.
