Calhoun County was formed in 1852 and was named after John C. Calhoun Vice President of the United States from 1825 – 1832. Located in the north part of the state, Calhoun County is a rural county with a population of 14,962 people according to the 2010 Census. Cities in Calhoun County include Bruce, Big Creek, Calhoun City, Derma, Pittsboro (county seat), Slate Springs and Vardaman. They have nine volunteer fire departments, five city police departments, and one hospital. Calhoun County State Wildlife Management Area which is 9,130 acres is located between Pittsboro and Big Creek. Vardaman is known as the Sweet Potato Capital of the World. They are surrounded by the counties of Pontotoc, Lafayette, Yalobusha, Grenada, Webster, and Chickasaw.

After taking office in January of 2012, they immediately started plans to add a K-9 unit to the force. With the more than generous help of the people of Calhoun County, they were able to achieve their goal within just a few months. Their K-9 Rico was purchased from Little Rock K-9 Academy. He is a dual purpose working K9 in narcotics, tracking and criminal apprehension.
