Sturgis is located in St. Joseph County, Michigan and is bordered to the south by Indiana and the Indiana Toll Road. M-66 and US-12 run through Sturgis. Population is over 11,000 and is the largest city in the county. The Sturgis Police Department employees a staff of 25 full time personnel with 19 sworn officers. This includes one full time detective and a Youth Services Officer working in the schools. The department also has a reserve division and a VIP (Volunteers in Policing Unit) that assist full time staff. Many officers serve as part of various specialized units within the department as well as with county-wide teams multi-jurisdictional teams such as the St. Joseph Major Crimes Task Force, St. Joseph Co. Area Narcotics Unit and the Special Response Team for tactical entries.

The Sheriff, by statute, is responsible for operating the County Jail. The Jail Division maintains all functions related to Jail and Inmate management. The jail houses approximately 167 inmates. The St. Joseph County Jail operates with a staff of twenty-four (24) full time and five (5) part-time employees, which includes four (4) Correction Sergeants. Annually, the jail staff processes approximately 3500 inmates. The Jail Staff’s primary responsibility is to provide a safe, secure, and humane environment for inmates.

The jail offers several programs including education, rehabilitation, mental health, ministry, and health care. Inmate work crews work throughout the county to help with many public works projects.
