The Vacation Hotline, (248) 871-2762, is a direct line to a Crime Prevention Section voicemail recorder. It is designed to provide responding officers with contact information should they be called to an emergency at the house while the resident is on vacation. It does not provide for special attention or extra patrol.
Property and Evidence
Property Release
Hours for property release are each Monday, Wednesday and Friday (except holidays) from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Property will only be released to the person who is named on the property record. The individual must have identification at the time of release. If the person named is unavailable to pick up their property, they can name an alternate person to pick it up. That person must have a letter signed and notarized by the owner of the property, authorizing that individual to pick up their property. That person must also provide proper identification at the time of release.
Release of Firearms
Firearms cannot be released to persons with felony conviction records. Persons picking up handguns must provide a valid gun registration for those weapons at the time of release. Prior to release of any firearm, the owner must receive authorization from the officer in charge of the case. 9-1-1 (Dispatch)(1)
The City of Farmington Hills’ 9-1-1 center is located in the Communications Section of the Police Department and is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Communications Section personnel are specially trained in expediting emergency response through the use of sophisticated call taking and computer-aided dispatch equipment. In addition, 9-1-1 operators are skilled in the techniques of Emergency Medical Dispatching. They have been trained to provide potentially life-saving medical advice, such as the application of CPR or choking-victim techniques, via telephone, to callers before the arrival of emergency units.

Prisoners and Bonds
Inquiries about prisoners held at the Farmington Hills Police Department and how to bond a prisoner out of our jail can be directed to Police Command Desk personnel by calling (248) 871-2610. The Court sets the amount of a bond. Individuals charged with felonies, or certain types of misdemeanors, are not eligible for bond until they go to court and are arraigned. After a prisoner is arraigned, he or she will be transferred to the Oakland County Jail, located at 1200 Telegraph Road in Pontiac, (248) 858-4950, unless bond is posted before being transported. All bonds posted at the Farmington Hills Police Department must be cash.
Vehicle Lockouts
The design of modern vehicles and the existence of side airbags create a danger for officers trying to unlock a vehicle. The Farmington Hills Police Department does not perform vehicle lockouts, except for emergencies. If you lock your keys in your vehicle contact a local tow company for assistance. If a child is locked in a vehicle the Fire Department and Police Department will respond and gain access.
Traffic Safety Section
Traffic Services
The Traffic Section’s primary duty is to ensure the safety of the motoring public. This section investigates serious crashes and conducts crash follow-up investigations. Other duties include warrant preparation for serious traffic offenses and traffic enforcement at targeted problem areas. This section also manages the school crossing guards, abandoned vehicles and various other programs.
Motor Carrier Program
The Traffic Section has operated a Motor Carrier Enforcement program since 1997. The program’s objectives are twofold: first, to ensure the safety of the motoring public by assuring that truck drivers are obeying traffic laws and operating properly equipped vehicles; and second, to reduce potential damage to City roads by identifying improperly loaded or overloaded trucks.
Directed Patrol Unit (DPU)(1)
The Directed Patrol Unit is a specialized unit that identifies and addresses crime patterns within the City of Farmington Hills. The unit is made up of several officers and is directly supervised by a sergeant. DPU supports the Patrol Division with calls for service and focuses on specific crime issues when they’re identified.

The Corrective Services Division of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the supervision and oversight of approximately 1,300 of the 1,700 inmates in the corrections system. Security ranges from maximum security to low-level offenders. This Division is responsible for all Main Jail operations as well as booking, visitation of inmates, and food services.The goal of the Division is to maintain order and discipline, promoting safety and security within the facility, thus providing for the security and safety for the citizens of Oakland County.
In 2013, the Corrective Services Division admitted close to 20,000 prisoners. This is a challenge for the personnel of the Division considering there is a consistent jail overcrowding issue. The deputies and command do a phenomenal job of adjusting to the inmate overcrowding and creating ways to keep the system moving and secure.The Main Oakland County Jail, located at 1201 North Telegraph, was built in 1973. The jail is a maximum security facility and has general inmate population housing of approximately 440 inmates. The intake area for processing new arrests includes holding tanks and observation cells which accommodate a capacity of 156 inmates.
A 24-hour, seven day per week health clinic is operated at the jail and has seven single cells. In March, 1989, the Annex (a direct supervision facility) was completed, which is attached to the Main Jail and has the capacity to house an additional 487 inmates.
Visitation
All visits take place through a video visitation system and are scheduled on an appointment basis only. Visits are scheduled by inmates. Visiting List information cannot be given over the phone or Internet. Information can be given in person with a current valid State issued I.D.
