Community Services Unit
As part of the Battle Creek Police Department’s commitment to Community Oriented Policing, the Community Services Unit is dedicated to enhancing community connections between neighbors, and the officers that serve them. Through partnerships with businesses, organizations, and citizen groups we strive to provide programs for residents and especially children to enhance their quality of life in the Battle Creek Community. The Unit consists of a Sergeant and two grant funded civilian personnel.
Crime Prevention Unit (CPU)
The mission of the BCPD Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) is to provide support to the community on the subjects of personal, residential, and business security. We strive to educate our citizens on common security concerns that they may encounter in their everyday life and develop their awareness of the factors that make them vulnerable to victimization. In our work with local businesses and organizations, we assess their physical and procedural security practices and make detailed recommendations on how to improve them.

Investigation Division
The General Investigations Unit, commonly referred to as the Detective Bureau, is one specialty unit of the Investigations Division. It is comprised of a Major, Lieutenant, one Detective/Sergeant and eight Detectives.
The unit is responsible for the investigation of more complex crimes and its work often complements the work of Patrol Officers assigned to our nine patrol districts. Detective work is highly specialized, usually encompassing the examination and evaluation of evidence to apprehend suspects and to build solid cases against them. The unit ensures that each one of its Detectives conducts solid, high-quality investigations in a timely manner and that each investigation is handled efficiently, with dedication and professionalism.
Office of Professional Standards
This office receives and investigates complaints about police personnel. All complaints are thoroughly investigated with the goal of assuring that residents received appropriate, professional, and courteous police services. Citizens are welcome to stop by the department or call the Office of Professional Standards with concerns. This office is also responsible for recruiting new professional police officers.
Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is the largest and the most visible Division of the Police Department.
This Division is comprised of and coordinates all uniform personnel, including Lieutenants, Sergeants, Corporals, Officers, Cadets and Explorers. Currently, we operate three shifts which incorporate an 8 hour schedule and a 12 hour schedule with rotating days off.

The Calhoun County Correctional Facility is located in the City of Battle Creek and was opened in 1994. It is a Direct Supervision facility, meaning that corrections officers work in the living areas of the inmates/detainees. The jail is rated for 630 inmates/detainees and employs a staff of approximately 120. The local population averages 275-325 inmates/detainees and, in order to offset costs and raise revenue for the County, rents out remaining beds to other cities, counties, and the federal government.
The Corrections Division is further responsible for Court and Justice Center Security, as well as the transportation of inmates/detainees to and from Courts and other correctional facilities.
