Crimes Against Persons Unit
Southfield Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit is responsible for crimes committed against persons, including misdemeanor and felonious assaults, kidnappings, armed robberies and homicides. Unit members interact regularly with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and are active in social and City agencies as part of the Unit’s commitment to the Southfield Police Department’s “community policing” philosophy.
Property Crimes Unit
These detectives investigate home invasions, commercial break-ins, larcenies and retail frauds. Their responsibility is to ensure residents, as well as workers in the community, feel safe in their homes and offices. They also provide training on effective crime prevention techniques to discourage these illegal acts from occurring at their residence or business. The Unit also is responsible for monitoring pawnshops and jewelry stores to ensure compliance with State statutes on property items being pawned or sold at their locations. In addition, the Property Crimes Unit attends monthly investigative lead meetings with other metro-area departments to share and disseminate information on possible related crimes. This assists the Southfield Police Department, as well as other metro Detroit-area agencies, in effectively reducing cross-jurisdictional related crimes.
Sex and Youth Crimes Unit
These detectives investigate incidents including sexual assaults, juvenile offenses, child abuse, neglect, missing persons and child pornography. Their daily duties include reviewing and preparing cases for court. They also spend time at the Prosecutor’s Office requesting arrest warrants and attending court proceedings.
Financial Crimes Unit
These detectives are responsible for investigating all financial-related crimes, such as credit card fraud, non sufficient funds and no account checks, embezzlement, larcenies by false pretense and conversion, along with any other fraudulent activity. The detectives work closely with Federal agencies such as U.S. Secret Service, FBI and I.N.S. In addition, cases often are investigated in conjunction with private business loss prevention personnel, as well as investigators representing retail companies, banks and health care corporations. Investigation responsibilities include pursuing cases from initial patrol reports through warrant presentation to local and/or County Prosecutor’s Offices. Each detective is a member of the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators and work with fraud investigators worldwide.
Auto Theft Unit
The Southfield Police Department has one detective assigned to the Oakland County Auto Theft Unit. Oakland County Auto Theft is a Task Force comprised of detectives from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, Farmington Hills Police Department, Royal Oak Police Department, Hazel Park Police Department, Detroit Police Department and the Southfield Police Department. Members of the unit are responsible for investigating auto theft related crimes including stolen vehicles, carjacking, larceny from auto, chop shops and fraud related thefts. This unit is funded by grant money provided by the Automobile Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA).
Internet/Computer Crimes Unit
Detectives assigned to this unit investigate a variety of crimes involving the use of computers or the Internet, hacking and website defacement. These detectives have a number of certifications in computer and cellular phone forensics as well as certified financial crime investigator designation.
Support Operations detectives conduct background checks at the request of the City Human Resources Department on people applying for employment with the City. Background checks also are performed on individuals requesting business and special licenses through the City Clerk’s Office; and residents applying for state firearm permits and federal firearm licenses.
The Patrol Division provides the first line of response to residents calling for assistance. The Division is essential in apprehending offenders and repressing criminal behavior. It furthers the Department’s community policing goals by encouraging a positive relationship with the community and by assisting residents and businesses with resolving nuisance-type issues.
The Patrol Division is also responsible for the Downtown Station and Special Operations, which support the main functions of the Police Department.
Based at the Downtown Station are the traffic bureau, crime prevention unit, and community policing officers. In addition, the PRIDE program is a cooperative project of the Police Department and the business community working on security and safety aspects; the Tactical Crime Suppression Unit focuses on special incidents in a particular area; the school liaison officers, work with the Southfield School District to encourage students in positive, crime-free living.
Special Operations is responsible for special details and City events, such as dignitary visits, and animal control.
Another Patrol Division component, the K-9 program, uses dogs to provide vital support in area searches for lost children, apprehending fleeing felons, explosive detection, and drug operations.
The Specialist program is comprised of patrol officers who have received training and reclassification to undertake additional duties. These duties include the gathering and processing of evidence at crime scenes; processing serious and fatal accident scenes; drug field testing; and film and video reporting.
The Teddy Bear Patrol Program brings comfort to children who are victims of accidents or crime, or who have witnessed some trauma. Officers provide these youngsters with donated new teddy bears.

The Corrective Services Division of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the supervision and oversight of approximately 1,300 of the 1,700 inmates in the corrections system. Security ranges from maximum security to low-level offenders. This Division is responsible for all Main Jail operations as well as booking, visitation of inmates, and food services.The goal of the Division is to maintain order and discipline, promoting safety and security within the facility, thus providing for the security and safety for the citizens of Oakland County.
In 2013, the Corrective Services Division admitted close to 20,000 prisoners. This is a challenge for the personnel of the Division considering there is a consistent jail overcrowding issue. The deputies and command do a phenomenal job of adjusting to the inmate overcrowding and creating ways to keep the system moving and secure.The Main Oakland County Jail, located at 1201 North Telegraph, was built in 1973. The jail is a maximum security facility and has general inmate population housing of approximately 440 inmates. The intake area for processing new arrests includes holding tanks and observation cells which accommodate a capacity of 156 inmates.
A 24-hour, seven day per week health clinic is operated at the jail and has seven single cells. In March, 1989, the Annex (a direct supervision facility) was completed, which is attached to the Main Jail and has the capacity to house an additional 487 inmates.
