Traverse City is rapidly becoming a diverse city with a population of 15,000 people. The Traverse City Police Department was one of the leaders in implementing community policing in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Working closely with Michigan State School of Criminal Justice and Regional Community Policing Institute; the Traverse City Police Department developed community policing strategies for several decades. With the decrease of government funding for community policing we saw our community policing sector patrol reduced to two officers.
In June of 2015 the TCPD formed a Community Policing Committee to get back to their roots. They now have Team Policing which provides their four service areas twenty four seven community police services. This organizational transformation decentralizes the department by assigning several officers to the four geographic areas. Their officers have ownership with their service areas and are accountable for problem solving in their assigned areas.
Their goal is to integrate the community policing philosophy into the culture of their police department. They establish this culture by obtaining community partnerships with their neighborhoods, businesses, and schools to maintain their quality of life and keep their community safe. Their belief is that a community that is engaged and feels heard by its police department will be more supportive of them.
In conjunction with community partnerships, organizational transformation, and problem solving, the TCPD utilizes Crime Mapping and other evidence based policing techniques to utilize smart policing techniques. This data driven strategy explains to their community why they shift resources and direct officers to problem areas.

Visitation is a privilege offered in an effort to allow inmates to maintain community, family and legal contacts. Visitation shall be available to all inmates, unless otherwise rescinded as a result of disciplinary action.

Central Records is located within the Sergeant Dennis W. Finch Law Enforcement Center at 851 Woodmere Ave, Traverse City, MI 49686 and can be contacted at 231-995-5005. Central Record’s is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, closed all holidays.
Central Records is responsible for processing all police reports, accident reports and firearm registrations.

All police reports, fatal traffic crashes, supplemental traffic crash reports and photographs are released through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). These requests are handled by the Detective Bureau Investigative Assistants. Requests must be made in writing and are accepted in person, by mail, email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or fax (231-995-5014). The Traverse City Police Department has five business days to provide a response. In cases when more time is needed to provide a complete response, a ten business day extension may be necessary. Fees vary based on the amount of information requested and the time it takes to process the information.
Police Reports: The price is based on the hourly rate established by the City Clerk, based on the FOIA statute, for the amount of time it takes to process the request, the hourly rate of the reviewer and the amount of time needed to review the request, plus the number of pages needed to fulfill the request.
