Gastonia is the county seat of Gaston County with an estimated population of 75,536 based on the 2016 census. This is the largest city in the county and the 13th largest in the state of North Carolina. The current mayor is Walker E. Reid, III. The City Manager is Michael C. Peoples.

The Criminal & Special Investigations Division is comprised of several sections including detectives who investigate criminal cases, ID detectives who gather evidence from crime scenes, and the ABC Enforcement which is responsible for enforcing laws governing the sale of alcohol and tobacco.

The Gaston County Jail is the facility utilized by the Gastonia Police Department. The facility holds male state pretrial detainees and convicted inmates as well as pretrial federal inmates from the United States Marshal’s Office. The jail has a total bed capacity of 408 inmates. All inmates are allowed visitation, via video and in person.
