The Wilmington Police Department is under the command of Police Chief Ralph M. Evangelous. The WPD is comprised of several bureaus and divisions – the Office of the Chief of Police, the Patrol Bureau, the Investigative Bureau, and the Administrative Services Bureau. The Patrol Bureau is the largest component of the department, providing patrol coverage to all areas within the city as well as being primarily responsible for responding to all calls for service. The Investigative Bureau, on the other hand, is divided into two sections. The Criminal Investigations Division handles follow-up investigations on violent crimes, domestic crimes, financial crimes, and property crimes, to name a few. The Special Investigations Division oversees investigations that involve gangs, narcotics, and federal task forces.

The New Hanover County Detention Facility is the jail used by the Wilmington Police Department. The facility, which is located on Juvenile Center Road, is operated by the Detention Division of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. The daily average inmate population in the jail is 569. Each inmate is allowed a 45-minute visit twice a week, up to 2 adult guests per visit. All visits must be scheduled ahead of time by the inmate. Visitation hours are from 1pm to 9pm daily.
